Sports in Novgorod Region have a long and distinguished history. One of traditional sports in the region is rowing. Novgorod Region has high achievements in rowing – our rowers won medals of the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

In recent years, about 60 sports have been developing rapidly in Novgorod Region. High performance sports include rowing, swimming, weightlifting, freestyle wrestling, gymnastics and acrobatic gymnastics. Our sportsmen achieve good results at the World and European junior championships and we expect new victories and records in these sports.

For many decades, such team games as football, volleyball and basketball remain popular among the Novgorod citizens. Basketball is played everywhere - in schools, universities and in the courtyards; some companies and organizations have set up their own teams. In general, more than a third of the region's residents practice sports or physical exercise on a regular basis.

For the past 10 years, the regional sports infrastructure has been expanded considerably, 15 new large sports facilities have been erected. A third of these facilities were financed by private investors. These are indoor ice arenas, swimming pools, sports complexes, stadiums and Regional Center for rowing, as well as a ski resort and a ski and biathlon center.

The existence of modern sport venues and the advantageous geographic location of the region have made Veliky Novgorod one of the most significant havens of sports activities not only in Northwestern Russia, but also in the whole country. Novgorod Region hosts annual international and national competitions, most significant of which are:

- 4 Nations ice-hockey Junior Tournament

- International Competitions in acrobatic gymnastics

- Russian Championship in rowing and Russian Cup Rowing Championship

- Russian National Judo Cup Championship

- Russian Figure Skating Championship

- National competitions in freestyle wrestling, acrobatic gymnastics, para-table tennis

- All-Russian Youth Beach Volleyball Festival «by the Walls of the Novgorod Kremlin»

- Children's football tournament UNIHOC FUSSIA CUP with the participation of the leading teams of Russia and Sweden
